A 30th, 40th or 50th birthday weekend on 30A: how to plan it
By Hibachi Bachelorette4 min read
Milestone birthdays on 30A follow a pattern: a house rented for the occasion, a group that has travelled for it, and one dinner that has to be the night. How to plan the weekend around that dinner.
The short answer
Plan a 30A milestone birthday weekend around one anchor dinner. Rent a house with outdoor space for everyone, keep the arrival night simple, and hold the birthday dinner at the house on the night the whole group is together, usually the Saturday. Book that date four to six weeks ahead in season.
Milestone birthdays on 30A have a shape
Most of the birthdays we cook on 30A are not a dinner that happens to fall on a birthday. They are a weekend built for one: a 30th with a group of friends who flew in, a 40th with couples and their children, a 50th or a 60th with three generations in one big house. Somebody rented the house for the occasion, and somebody else is quietly responsible for it going well.
The pattern that works is the same in all of them. One dinner is the birthday, and the rest of the weekend is arranged so that dinner can be the best night.
Pick the house around the dinner
On 30A the house is the venue, because the restaurants are small and a table for sixteen on a Saturday in season is not a reservation that exists. So choose the house with the dinner in mind: an outdoor table that seats everyone, and a flat, open-sky spot of about 6 ft by 4 ft for the grill, with 3 feet clear for the chef.
Different towns suit different birthdays. Seagrove Beach and WaterColor take a lot of three-generation houses. Seacrest Beach has big rental houses around its lagoon pool for the largest groups. Rosemary Beach gives you a lantern-lit courtyard for a smaller, grown-up table. Grayton Beach has older houses with yards that have actual room in them.
Which night is the birthday dinner?
Not the arrival night. People land at different times, someone's flight is delayed, and the birthday person spends the evening greeting people at the door. Keep Friday simple.
Hold the birthday dinner on the night everyone is there and rested, which is usually the Saturday, or the actual birthday if it falls inside the weekend. Book a 6:00 or 6:30 seating if the group is going out afterwards, or 7:00 if dinner is the whole evening.
Tell us who the birthday is for on the booking form. The onion volcano is timed to them, not to the cooking sequence, and the chef will make sure they are the one in the middle of the photo.
The three-protein night
A standard plate is $60 per adult with two proteins. Milestone birthdays tend to go to $70 for three, because it is the night to have the steak and the shrimp and the salmon rather than choose. Every plate comes with ginger salad, hibachi vegetables and fried rice.
Upgrades are per person: filet mignon or sea scallops add $10, lobster tail adds $20. Gyoza, edamame and noodles are $10, $10 and $8 per order, which suits a table that wants something to share while the grill heats up. Everyone picks their own proteins; the whole table does not have to be on the same plate.
Mixed ages and big groups
A 40th or a 50th often has children in the house. Children aged 5 to 12 are $30 with one protein, and thirteen and over is priced as an adult. If there are a lot of young children, run two seatings: the children eat at 5:30 and the adults after, same chef and same station. It adds about 40 minutes and gives the adults an evening that is not organised around bedtime. Our kids' hibachi birthday post covers that setup in detail.
Above 18 guests in a single seating we bring a second chef and a second station, so the whole group eats together rather than in shifts. We cook for up to 40 in an evening.
Cake, music, photos
Bring the cake. We clear the station completely at the end of service, which leaves a clean table at exactly the moment the party wants it.
Bring the music too: we do not bring speakers and we have no opinions about your playlist. Photos and video are welcome all evening, and if there is a particular shot you want, the volcano or the whole group behind the grill, tell the chef at the start and it will be set up properly rather than caught by accident.
We never bring alcohol; the drinks are yours.
What a milestone birthday dinner costs
