Destin or 30A for a bachelorette weekend? How to choose
By Hibachi Bachelorette6 min read
Both are an hour apart on the same coast and they make very different weekends. The deciding question is not which is prettier, it is where twelve people sleep and how they get to dinner.
The short answer
Choose Destin if the weekend is built around the harbour, boats and going out. Choose 30A if it is built around a house, the beach and long dinners together. The biggest practical difference is where you sleep: Destin groups are mostly in condos and 30A groups mostly in houses, and that decides what dinner at the place you are staying can look like.
The short version
Destin and 30A sit on the same stretch of Gulf, roughly an hour apart in summer traffic, and people plan bachelorette weekends in both as though they were interchangeable. They are not. Destin is a harbour town with condo towers, boats and a going-out scene that is mostly in one place. 30A is a road strung with small beach towns, where the houses are the attraction and the restaurants are small on purpose.
We cook bachelorette dinners in both, and the groups that end up happiest are the ones that picked the place to match the weekend they actually wanted rather than the one with better photos on Instagram.
- Pick Destin if the weekend is a boat day, the harbour and a big night out.
- Pick 30A if the weekend is a house, the beach and dinners where everyone sits at one table.
- Either way, the first night is the one to plan hardest, because it is the one nobody can book.
Where you sleep decides most of the weekend
This is the difference that matters most, and it is the one people notice last. In Destin the housing splits three ways: high-rise condos along Scenic 98 and the beach, low-rise complexes and townhomes, and detached houses in the neighbourhoods behind. A bachelorette group of ten or more usually ends up in a big condo, because that is where the beds are.
On 30A it runs the other way. The groups are almost all in houses: cottages in Seaside and Seagrove Beach, courtyard houses and carriage houses in Rosemary Beach, newer and bigger houses with real driveways in Inlet Beach. A house gives the group a kitchen, a pool or a deck, and somewhere to be together that is not a hotel corridor.
A condo is a perfectly good place to sleep. It is a much harder place to host a dinner, which is where the next difference comes from.
Nights out: Destin has the harbour, 30A has the dinner table
If the weekend is built around going out, Destin wins and it is not close. The harbour boardwalk puts boats, bars and restaurants within walking distance of each other, and a group can move between them without anyone driving.
30A is quieter by design. The good restaurants between Dune Allen and Inlet Beach are small, they book up weeks ahead in season, and the ones that will take a table of fourteen tend to offer an early or a very late seating. Rideshare is thin, and the towns are a few minutes apart by car and a long way apart on foot. Most 30A bachelorette groups go out properly once, on the Saturday, and eat at the house the rest of the time.
That is not a weakness if you plan for it. It just means the dinner table at the house is the centre of a 30A weekend in a way it never is in Destin.
Getting there and getting around
Destin is closer to the Destin–Fort Walton Beach airport (VPS). The east end of 30A, around Rosemary, Alys and Inlet Beach, is closer to Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP). If half the group is flying into each, the drive between the two is the single biggest time cost of the weekend, so it is worth choosing the house first and the flights second.
Traffic on US-98 through Destin in July is genuinely bad between four and six in the afternoon, which is exactly when a group is checking in and trying to get to an early dinner. On 30A the road is slower but shorter, and bikes and golf carts do a lot of the work between neighbouring towns.
Dinner for the whole group, in each place
This is where we come in, and the answer differs between the two.
On 30A, a hibachi dinner at the house is the simplest version of the evening. We need about 6 ft by 4 ft of flat, level ground with open sky above it and 3 feet of clear standing room for the chef. A rear deck, a pool surround, a courtyard or a driveway all work, and most rental houses have at least two of those. There is no travel fee anywhere on 30A.
In Destin, the first question is where you are staying. In a detached house or townhome it is just as easy as on 30A. In a condo it is almost never the balcony: most are too narrow, they are roofed by the balcony above, and a lot of Destin buildings prohibit open-flame cooking outright. What works is a reservable poolside pavilion, an outdoor grilling area or a ground-floor patio, so check with the front desk before you book anyone and send us the name of the space. Destin may carry a travel fee depending on the exact address, and it is shown on the booking form before you commit.
The pattern we cook most in Destin is the early seating before the harbour: the full show at six, everyone fed and photographed, out the door by eight. On 30A dinner is more often the whole evening. Our Destin page covers the condo logistics in detail.
What dinner costs either way
The rate is the same in both places. A standard plate is $60 per adult with two proteins, or $70 with three. Ginger salad, hibachi vegetables and fried rice come with every plate. There is a $500 party minimum on the food total, and 7% Florida sales tax and a 20% gratuity are added.
For a group of 14 at the standard rate that is $1,067 all in, tax and gratuity included. On 30A that is the whole number. In Destin, add the travel fee if the booking form shows one. What a 30A bachelorette hibachi party actually costs walks through the other group sizes.
If you genuinely cannot decide
Look at the stretch in between. Miramar Beach sits between Destin and Sandestin, with gulf-front houses and resort villas, and Sandestin puts golf, the beach and Baytowne Wharf behind one gate. Either one gets you to the Destin harbour for the big night and to the western end of 30A for a beach day, without committing the whole weekend to one or the other.
Whichever you choose, plan the arrival night as the night nobody leaves the house. The 30A bachelorette itinerary explains why Friday breaks more weekends than anything else.
Questions people ask
Is Destin or 30A better for a bachelorette party?
Destin is better for a weekend built around boats, the harbour and going out, because everything is close together. 30A is better for a weekend built around a rental house, the beach and dinners together, because the houses are the draw and the restaurants are small.
Can a hibachi chef cook at a Destin condo?
Usually not on the balcony, which is too narrow, roofed over and often prohibited by the building. A reservable poolside pavilion, grilling area or ground-floor patio usually works instead. Check with the front desk and send us the name of the space.
Is there a travel fee for Destin?
There is no travel fee anywhere on 30A. Destin, Miramar Beach, Fort Walton Beach and Panama City Beach may carry one depending on the exact address, and it is shown on the booking form before you commit.
How far ahead should we book dinner?
Four to six weeks for a Friday or Saturday between March and August. A $200 deposit holds the date and comes off the final balance.
